Along the road Veurne - Ieper we find 4 major Belgian military cemeteries. In the order from Veurne to Ieper: Steenkerke, Oeren, Hoogstade and Westvleteren. There is no public transportation along this road. Visiting these cemeteries can only by car or travelling in group by coach.


On these 4 cemeteries are a total of more than 3,000 Belgian soldiers buried as casualties of the First World War.





Hoogstade is located about 7.5 miles south of Veurne and 13.5 miles north of Ieper. Coming from Ieper the Brouwerijstraat is to the left of the road. It is a narrow dead-end street where the military cemetery is located at the end. However, there is a very large car park at the cemetery.


This cemetery was laid out according to the Land Registry in 1921.


Here are 804 tombstones of Belgian soldiers, of which 14 only known unto God, on an area of ​​1.2 acres.

There are also a number of graves of soldiers of the Commonwealth.
