Sint-Margriete-Houtem, Wijngaardstraat 9

The military cemetery of Sint-Margriete-Houtem is situated 3 km. north-east of Tienen, the Belgian sugartown.

Surrounded by open fields in a magnificent decorum of half an acre the remains of 174 heroes are buried here.

Four of them are only known unto God.

Most of the graves contain the remains of soldiers of the 22nd infantry regiment. They died in fierce battles on August 18, 1914. It is said that the high numbers of casualties is due to the fact that this unit was ambushed by German troops after they were warned late to pull back from their advanced positions.
