On the Parvis Notre Dame, in fact the church square of the church of The Holy Mary we find the Laken cemetery behind the church. This cemetery is famous because it holds the crypt of the Belgian royal family. But there is also an honorary park with the remains of 89 heroes who died in the First World War. One of those heroes remained unknown.
The headstones that decorate the graves of the heroes have been chosen by the municipality of Laken and they are the ugliest I've seen on any cemetery.
In a private grave is Max Pilgrims, victim of the heavy fights in Aarschot on August 19, 1914. Sculptor Ernest Salu is the creator of this wonderful work of art that in a remarquable way portrays the dying soldier.
