Just like the civil cemetery of the city of Brussels, the cemetery of Schaarbeek is also situated on the territory of Evere, another suburb of Brussels, at the confluence of the Jules Bordetlaan and Everestraat.
In a beautiful honorary park 163 First World War heroes are buried, one of them is known to God only. The heroes are buried under a plastic cross. Until the early ‘70s they rested at the old cemetery of Schaarbeek, now a park.
Probably the city decided, in the move to this new location, to replace the old tombstones with a new symbol, at the same time a symbol of progress in economic development.
The veterans of both world wars and the heroes of World War II are all buried in the same honorary park.
The monument that decorates the honorary park is of a totally different order. Old-fashioned drama carved in bluestone.
